I remember the early days of the AIDS crisis in the united states, and vividly remember watching the television movie based on Randy Shilts’ book, “And the Band Played On”, and wondering why a county as medically and scientifically advanced as the United States could have dragged their feet for so long before legitimately address the problem. As both an attorney and an HIV+ person this story concerning the possession of three or more condoms frightens me. Perhaps prostitution is actually a problem for these three cities and something any responsible mayor or city council would want to address. However the spread of HIV the virus that causes AIDS is a far larger problem with far reaching effects and consequences. Recently, I was at my quarterly appointment with my Infectious Disease Doctor who is primarily responsible for treating my HIV. I was asking about a new delivery system for a drug I take called NORVIR which is a protease inhibitor which makes my other two anti-virals more effective. The current delivery system for NORVIR is a gelatin capsule which requires refrigeration and tends to cause or exacerbate stomach problems. The new system will not require either refrigeration nor will it be a gelatin capsule. Read the rest of this entry »
